  • Ewe Venavi Twin Pair, Togo #946
  • Statuettes for the cult of twins.
  • Among the Ewe, these representations are called Venavi and Hohovi among the Fon.
  • The Ewe live on a coastal zone extending from Ghana Togo and Benin to the borders of Nigeria.
  • They practice a Worship of Twins very similar to that of the Yoruba, and it is in this framework that these statuettes are created on Commission by Surviving Family Members of which the very varied styles are sometimes depending on local influences (Akan on the Ghana side, Yoruba on the Nigeria side)...
  • Twin Figures are revered in many Cultures. The modern appearance is explained by the fact that Deceased Twin(s) are seen as Living People. The Figures wear shoes, trousers and other personal objects. No one ever says a Twin has died. They say "he or she is in the bush fetching fire wood." This means that they is not far and will come back soon.
  • Twins are considered to be Immortal. From birth on they are considered to be Gods or Spirits, and must always get special care.
  • If Hohovi or Venavi Figures are to be of any benefit, they must be housed and looked after particularly well by their survivors. They must be given the best food, drink and clothes. One tries to spoil them in every possible way, in order for them to display their abilities for the benefit of the family, rather than making them feel so neglected that they might do harm.
  • Among some groups, such as the Yoruba in Nigeria, the Ewe in Togo, and the Fon in Benin, an important twin cult has sprung up. Twins are regarded as the chosen ones of the spirit powers. Their amazing closeness, which is believed to survive even after death, is stressed. The Yoruba believe that Twins have a Joint Soul. If one dies, the other Twin is also threatened with death.Their soul has lost its equilibrium and sways between this World and the Next. The Deceased Twin determinedly tries to pull the survivor over to him as soon as possble. That has to be opposed. Not only do the parents put more effort than ever into the surviving child , they also try to keep the Deceased One in their midst.

Such an Adorable Book
Format: Kindle
This book was one I originally borrowed on Kindle to read to my twin niece and nephew to hopefully help them stop fighting. The book was so adorable, I bought it for Kindle to make sure I always had a copy. While the message is great, treating others with kindness, the illustrations and rhymes are what make it unique. There are some larger words used, but they are all in a clear context to help build vocabulary. The twins loved the farm animals and I actually used the book as part of a lesson on kindness for my Sunday school class who also enjoyed it. Even though I already have the Kindle version, I am ordering paper copies to give as Christmas gifts this year. I love this author, the illustrations, and the message. This is the type of children's book everyone can enjoy and agree on.

A must book for children
Format: Paperback
I got this book 15 years ago at a garage sale and it was one of my kids favorite books of all time. We took it with us everywhere we went (in the car, on vacation etc). My daughter is now in her 20's and she works at a daycare center. She wanted to get some books for their library and when I reminded her of this book she had to get it for them. It has quickly become the classroom favorite, the children ask for her to read it to them daily.
