The iconic Tree Aloe is one of South Africa’s most majestic indigenous plants, a living sculpture that brings instant presence and elegance to any landscape. With its smooth, grey-green trunk and beautifully branching crown of soft, architectural leaves, Aloe bainesii creates a bold, tropical feel that only becomes more impressive with age. In Cape Town’s Mediterranean climate, it grows reliably and steadily, producing clusters of warm coral‑pink flowers in mid to late winter, offering vital nectar for sunbirds during the cooler months. This tree aloe is perfect for large gardens, feature beds, poolside planting, or creating a dramatic focal point in modern and waterwise landscapes.
Thriving in full sun with excellent drainage, the Tree Aloe is drought‑tolerant, wind-resistant, and ideal for coastal gardens. Bring timeless beauty and structure to your garden with the magnificent Tree Aloe – Aloe bainesii / Aloidendron barberae.
Why You’ll Love It
• One of South Africa’s most iconic architectural plants.
• Produces beautiful winter flowers that attract sunbirds and pollinators.
• Highly drought-tolerant and perfect for waterwise landscaping.
• Creates an instant “resort garden” or tropical look.
• Long‑lived, hardy, and low maintenance once established.
Plant & Care
Plant in well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil and water occasionally during establishment. Once rooted, the Tree Aloe becomes extremely waterwise and thrives in full sun. Avoid planting too close to walls or structures, as it forms a broad, branching canopy over time. Remove old flower stalks after blooming and apply a light feeding in spring if desired. Protect young plants from severe frost until they are well established.
