❃ Glossy black with a faint reddish sheen along the legs, the giraffe stag beetle spends most of its early life unseen — its larvae burrow deep into the rotting wood of fallen trees, where they feed for two to three years before pupating into adults. Once emerged, the beetles live only a few short months, drinking sap and tree exudates from wounded bark and competing fiercely for the best feeding sites in the canopy.
❃ Like much of Madagascar's extraordinary insect fauna, this species depends entirely on intact forest, and continues to lose ground to logging and agricultural clearance. Its sheer size and theatrical jaws have made it a favourite among collectors and naturalists for generations — a slow-grown, briefly-flying giant of the rainforest, and one of the most impressive beetles ever described.
