King Diamond is well known for his themes of the occult and demonic stories, as well as his drive towards atmospheric horror scenarios and changing masks. King Diamond is one of the most outstanding personalities of today's metal scene. With Mercyful Fate and King Diamond he wrote metal-history and is an important part of the scene for decades. Since 1986 King has released many classic horror metal albums, which because of their outstanding storylines and musical variety are unique in the hard rock scene.
The debut album 'Fatal Portrait' was released in 1986 by Roadrunner Records. The album was produced by Rune Hoyer. Along with 'The Spider's Lullabye', this is one of the band's only albums which is not a whole concept album. 'Fatal Portrait' has sold over 100,000 copies in North America alone. The title of the album comes from The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Wilde describes the painting as "the fatal portrait" several times throughout the novel.
