"The players today are much better than we were.... But there is one thing that we could do better. We could pass the ball better than they can now. Man, we used to pass that basketball around like it was a hot potato."--Sam "Buck" Covington, former member of the Washington Bruins

n a nation distinguished by a great black athletic heritage, there is perhaps no sport that has felt the impact of African American culture more than basketball. Most people assume that the rise of black basketball was a fortuitous accident of the inner-city playgrounds. In Hot Potato, Bob Kuska shows that it was in fact a consciously organized movement with very specific goals.

When Edwin Henderson introduced the game to Washington, D.C., in 1907, he envisioned basketball not as an end in itself but as a public-health and civil-rights tool. Henderson believed that, by organizing black athletics, including basketball, it would be possible to send more outstanding black student athletes to excel at northern white colleges and debunk negative stereotypes of the race. He reasoned that in sports, unlike politics and business, the black race would get a fair chance to succeed. Henderson chose basketball as his marquee sport, and he soon found that the game was a big hit on Washington's segregated U Street. Almost simultaneously, black basketball was catching on quickly in New York, and the book establishes that these two cities served as the birthplace of the black game.

Hot Potato chronicles the many successes and failures of the early years of black amateur basketball. It also recounts the emergence of black college basketball in America, documenting the origins of the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association, or CIAA, which would become the Big Ten of black collegiate sports.

The book also details for the first time the rise of black professional basketball in America, with a particular emphasis on the New York Renaissance, a team considered by experts to be as important in the development of black basketball as the Harlem Globetrotters. Kuska recounts the Renaissance's first victory over the white world champion Original Celtics in 1925, and he evaluates the significance of this win in advancing equality in American sports. By the late 1920s, the Renaissance became one of the sport's top draws in white and black America alike, setting the stage for the team's undisputed world championship in 1939. As Edwin Henderson had hoped--and as any fan of the modern-day game can tell you--the triumphs certainly did not end there.

Best I’ve found yet for facial psoriasis
Anyone who has facial psoriasis will tell you there are not a lot of products that you can put on your face without irritation or flareups. This soap is just what I needed. There are no irritating chemicals or perfumes in this soap. I have read other reviews that the soap does not last very long but there is a way to use it to make it last. First, I wet my face and then I wet my fingertips and rub my finger tips across the dry bar of soap and then lightly rub my face with my fingertips softening the plaques and then lightly wash with a soft cotton washcloth. It is not really moisturizing but not over drying either. I follow up with an organic vegetable-based glycerin oil to moisturize. This is the best product I have found yet.

Dries completely clear, no pilling/balling, does have fragrance
Style: Kids SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Size: 3 Ounce (1 Pack) Mineral Sunscreen, Style: Kids SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Size: 3 Ounce (1 Pack) Mineral Sunscreen
I use a ton of sunscreen, religiously, and this one, at SPF 50, caught my eye. I never heard of this brand before or tried any of their products. While I am not a kid, I often like to use kids' sunscreen because I find it to be more gentle. This is a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide as the filter. Mineral sunscreens often leave a white cast but this one claims to dry completely clear - and I was curious to try this. Indeed, it dries completely clear! It absorbs amazingly and is a beautiful sunscreen for the face. It leaves a nice velvety glow when it dries - there is no oiliness and no shine. Even if you wear no makeup or products on top of it, you will look perfectly fine. I also tried layering it with multiple products, both under and over, and this sunscreen does not pill - which is another huge plus for me - as there is nothing worse than starting over when your sunscreen makes your face look like an odd mess. Overall, the performance of this sunscreen completely blew me away - this is one of the best sunscreens I've tried. A word of caution though - this sunscreen does have fragrance (and it is pretty heavily fragranced) so do keep this in mind if you are sensitive to fragrance in skincare.

50 SPF Aloe Up Suntan Lotion -- 3 ounce Tube -- Smells great! :-)
Style: Kids SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Size: 3 Ounce (1 Pack) Mineral Sunscreen, Style: Kids SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Size: 3 Ounce (1 Pack) Mineral Sunscreen
Sunscreen is super important because it allows you to stay in the rays of the sun. This tube of 50 SPF Aloe Up has been great so far! The tube, at 3 ounces, is a prefect size to keep in a toiletries bag. There was a seal under the cap and the tube has a small hole, which helps prevent unintended over-squeeze waste. The lotion is a bit thinner than I expected, but it rubs in smooth/invisible and smells great! I had no problem with breakouts or clogging of pores, and no burn under winter sun. With regard to winter sun, I rated this a 5 since so far this has worked great and there's been no problems...But... because we're under winter sun right now, I won't be able to test this under full strength sweaty summer sun for some time. I will come back and update this review if anything changes in the heat and stronger sun of summer. Hope this helps! :-)

Quality sunscreen with a light scent and no griminess!
Style: Kids SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Size: 3 Ounce (1 Pack) Mineral Sunscreen
Most sunscreens I have used in the past have a very distinct smell and/or leaves excess oiliness residue, so you can imagine I have my doubts when a manufacturer advertises its product have a clear and lightweight application with hydrating and comfortable feel on application. To my surprise, this product actually delivers on its claims! The consistency of the lotion itself is indeed very lightweight and easily works into the skin without being greasy as normally found with other brands. Despite its light application, I found that it still offers great protection after being exposed to moisture or coming in contact with water. A sunscreen with a relatively high SPF protection in a non-greasy, lightly scented and weighted application along with its accommodative formulary for sensitive skin is quite impressive; and about the only negative I can find is its high price for a 3 oz. tube relative to other brands. Overall, this is a good sunscreen at its list price, and one that I can recommend if you can find it at a discount.

Good for body, reapply often, use something else on face
Style: Kids SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Size: 3 Ounce (1 Pack) Mineral Sunscreen
We used this sunscreen at the Oregon coast on a cold but sunny February weekend and it had good sun protection. It’s non greasy and applies easily. No white cast when fully rubbed in and absorbed. My kids were able to use it without any irritations but I could not use it on my face, it irritated my skin immediately and I had to wash it off with facial cleanser and apply a sunscreen meant only for faces. I have sensitive skin and some rosacea, so this one I kept to only using on my arms and chest. One of my kids still got a sunburn on her cheeks after I applied this sunscreen, she had quite pale, sensitive skin, so again I would still recommend using something else on the face.
