Blume present the first vinyl reissue of Alvin Curran's Canti Illuminati, originally released in 1982. Between diverse polarities of experimental practice, from free improvisation and modern classical composition, to primitivism, electronic music, and extended techniques, for more than half a century Alvin Curran has stood as beacon in the landscape of organized sound. From his efforts within Musica Elettronica Viva, the collective which he helped found in 1966 with Frederic Rzewski and Richard Teitelbaum, to those as a solo-performer and composer, his sounds and ideas have effected immeasurable change. Canti Illuminati, composed and recorded between 1973 and 1977, stands as one of the great documents from the golden era of Curran's singular brand of creative radicalism - combining a deep sense of social and political consciousness, with creative humanism and visionary compositional ideas. A bridge between the American and European traditions of experimental music, Canti Illuminati is Curran's tribute to the human voice, "the most natural source of music", and it delves toward the very origins of music itself. In lyrical and poetic form, it rethinks the possibilities and potential of organized sound, seeking something fundamentally human. Standing apart from canonical definition, it contributes to a more complex and nuanced understanding of minimalism. Consciously conceived by Curran for the format of the LP, the album takes form as a single work in two parts: "Canti Illuminati [For Choir, Synthesizer, Piano And Tape]", a structured choral improvisation, built from the contributions and voices of Alessandro Bruno, Antonella Talamonti, Antonio Cesareni, David Thorner, Elisabetta Bordes-Page, Giorgio Caruano, Luca Miti, Manuela Garroni, Nicola Bernardini, Pierluigi Castellano, and Sista Carandini; and "Canti Illuminati [For Voice, Synthesizer, Tape]", which Curran realized as a solo performer with his own voice, tape-delayed feedback, and a Serge synthesizer and sequencer. Sinfully under celebrated and all too rarely heard since it's initial release, Canti Illuminati remains a profoundly compelling and moving body of sound. a landscape of sustained tone, rippling texture, and structural intervention. Really Helpful and Easier to Use Than I Expected

I bought the APA 7th Edition manual for my college research papers, and it’s been a lifesaver. Compared to the older edition, this one feels much clearer and way easier to navigate. The full-color layout and the examples throughout really help when I’m stuck on how to format citations or references.
I especially appreciate the new sections tailored for students like me—it’s not just for professional writers anymore. Plus, the tips on inclusive language made me think more carefully about how I write.
It’s definitely a dense read if you try to go cover-to-cover, but as a reference book, it’s super practical. The only downside is that it’s a bit pricey, but for the quality and how often I use it, it’s totally worth it.
If you’re in school or need to write APA-style papers regularly, I’d recommend grabbing this manual. It makes the whole process less stressful.

Vast improvement in substance and organization; a few downsides

Among my other writing-related pursuits, I edit PhDs. This APA 7 manual is a big improvement over earlier APA editions.
The primary purpose of any edition is to update the APA standards. This manual is packed with content and examples that were IMO long overdue. For instance, there are templates to show the order of data for Reference entries, and there are side-by-side examples of Reference and in-text citations.
I ordered the wire-bound version because it works well in any workspace (i.e., you can easily fold the book in half or leave it wide open.
The chapters are divided by tabs, with the ToC (table of contents) for that chapter printed on the tab.
Compared to earlier versions, the font is smaller, but it remains highly readable. The margins are wide enough for notes.
There are several downsides to the manual that I hope will be resolved in the next edition:
(a) For such a large manual, the cover on the wirebound copy is both too short and relatively flimsy. It is too short because it is only the width of the pages. It does not extend over the tabs. It is too flimsy because it is the same weight as earlier and less substantial manuals.
(b) There is no tab for the index.
(c) Although the font in the chapters is a sufficient size, the font in the index is much smaller and the index pages are crowded; there is less room in the margins for taking notes.
I dealt with the cover-related problems by cutting up a transparent binder/page sleeve for the front, back, and spine of the cover, and by creating my own tab for the index. There's nothing to be done for the index font except to live with it.
