Circle of Richard Wilson (1714–1782)

Italianate River Landscape with Pastoral Figures and Waterfall
Oil on canvas, late 18th century

A fine late 18th-century Italianate landscape painted in the classical tradition of Richard Wilson.

The composition is carefully balanced. Dark trees frame the scene on both sides. A waterfall flows between rocky banks in the foreground. Beyond, the landscape opens into soft hills under a calm sky.

Pastoral figures add life to the scene. A traveller rests near the water, while a cart and livestock move through the distance. These details create a sense of quiet rural activity.

The artist uses warm tones in the foreground and cooler colours in the distance. This contrast creates depth and atmosphere. The structure follows the influence of Claude Lorrain, whose work shaped British landscape painting.

This painting was not made from a real view. Instead, the artist created an idealised landscape designed to reflect harmony and balance. This approach was popular in Britain during the late 18th century.

Key Features

  • Classical Italianate composition with framing trees
  • Waterfall feature adding movement and structure
  • Pastoral figures and rural narrative detail
  • Strong sense of depth through colour and light
  • Painted in the tradition of Richard Wilson

Condition

The painting has been relined and is stable. The surface shows age-related craquelure, which is consistent with its period. The sky appears slightly softened, likely due to earlier cleaning. Overall, the painting presents well.

Presentation

The painting sits in an elegant gilt frame. The frame complements the warm tones and enhances its decorative appeal.

Overall

A classic example of late 18th-century British landscape painting. It combines strong composition with timeless decorative appeal. Ideal for both traditional and modern interiors.

Fun Way to Teach Manners
Format: Hardcover
This book was one I read to my daughters when they were young and I am now reading it to my grandsons. I plan to read it to my fourth grade class, as well.

... over with my 3yo and 5yo boys but they loved it!
Format: Hardcover
I wasn't sure how this would go over with my 3yo and 5yo boys but they loved it!! They always enjoy pulling it out and now I can refer back to the characters to remind them of their manners in a more positive way. The only thing is I kinda wish they had used a different animal than pig, since for some reason I don't like saying "don't be like the pigs" (since I don't really want them calling eachother or other kids pigs). But so far it has been fine :) It's also very nice they included "Be kind to animals, they have feelings too." We say that all the time around here since we have kitties. Also the part about table manners is great since we had already been teaching the kids to ask before being excused from the table.

Manners Can Be Fun
Format: Hardcover
What a cute book! I bought it for my 2 and 3 year old boys. We are attempting to teach them simple, common manners in a fun way and they love learning through books. Manners Can Be Fun presents manners in a simple, easy to understand, engaging way. The boys enjoy reading this book and it's a great way to have positive conversations about specific situations they experience daily like sharing toys, picking up after themselves, whining, meal time. It's a fun book!

Wonderful, simple book for children of all ages
Format: Hardcover
I am 65 years old and this was one of my first books. The revisions along the way have not changed the drawings that much. It is simple, but well illustrated, and gives a basic idea of good manners. I recommend it for every child - it makes them think about behavior. The way the author demonstrates "me first" and "whinney" have stuck with me all these years.

LOVE
Format: Hardcover
I must say, I was very touched by this book, the heart behind it specifically. What beautiful illustrations. Our son with autism absolutely LOVES his ABCS and LOVES planes trains and automobiles. Little boys are a gift from God and this book highlights that. From one parent to another, thank you, we all loved it and loved watching his little eyes turn bright and light up. Big hugs.
