Experience broadcast-quality voice capture with the Shure SM7dB, a rugged dynamic microphone that pairs a cardioid capsule with a built-in preamp to deliver warm, smooth tone and controlled gain in any recording or performance environment. Engineered for studio pros, podcasters, broadcasters, and musicians, the SM7dB minimizes noise and delivers articulate speech and singing with natural presence. Its robust construction, flexible sound shaping options, and convenient onboard controls make it a versatile workhorse for vocal work, music production, voiceover, and streaming alike.

  • Built-in preamp with up to +28 dB of clean gain—designed by Shure to provide a low-noise, flat, transparent signal even when your interface has a modest preamp, helping you achieve steady level control without forcing aggressive compression.
  • Cardioid dynamic design—captures focused vocal performance while reducing ambient room noise and handling high sound pressure levels, making it ideal for studios, home studios, and live environments.
  • Preamp bypass switch—lets you bypass the internal preamp to route the signal directly through an external preamp or mixer, offering flexible integration into complex signal chains.
  • Rugged all-metal construction—built to withstand the rigors of daily studio sessions, broadcasting workflows, and on-the-road use, with a user-friendly feel that remains comfortable for long sessions.
  • Versatile vocal and instrument compatibility—well-suited for voiceover, podcasts, broadcasting, vocal performances, and even instrument miking, delivering a warm, natural tonality that sits well in any mix.

How to install Shure SM7dB

To get the best results from the SM7dB, begin with a secure mounting setup and proper positioning. Attach the microphone to a compatible stand or boom using a standard shock mount to minimize handling noise. Place the mic slightly off-axis from your mouth at a comfortable distance—typically 4 to 8 inches for spoken word, or closer for intimate vocal takes, depending on your room and voice. If you plan to use the built-in preamp, adjust the gain carefully to avoid clipping while preserving warmth and detail. For external preamp routing, flip the preamp bypass switch and connect the SM7dB’s XLR output to your external preamp or mixer, then fine-tune the chain to taste. Set a pop filter or windscreen to reduce plosives and protect the capsule from moisture and saliva. Finally, monitor your recording closely, listening for any sibilance, proximity effect, or room reflections, and adjust mic placement, room treatment, or EQ to achieve the clearest, most natural voice. The result is a professional-sounding vocal that sits confidently in a dense mix with minimal post-processing.

Quick steps for quick setup:

1) Mount on a stable stand with a shock mount.

2) If using internal preamp, connect to your audio interface via XLR and set gain to a moderate level, then adjust on the interface for headroom.

3) If using external preamp, engage preamp bypass and route to the external chain; configure levels to avoid clipping.

4) Add a pop filter and consider acoustic treatment to reduce room reflections.

5) Record test takes, listen critically, and dial in proximity, EQ, and compression to suit your voice and track needs.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is the SM7dB suitable for both studio and live environments?

A: Yes. Its rugged, all-metal build and cardioid dynamic design make it robust for studio work and stage use while providing controlled off-axis rejection to minimize feedback and background noise.

Q: What does the built-in preamp do, and when would I bypass it?

A: The built-in preamp offers up to +28 dB of clean gain, simplifying signal chains and improving performance with lower-output interfaces. Use the preamp bypass switch when you want to route the signal through an external preamp or mixer for a specific chain or coloration.

Q: Can I use the SM7dB for podcasting and voiceover?

A: Absolutely. Its smooth frequency response and proximity-friendly design make it ideal for spoken word, podcasts, and voiceover work, delivering a warm, professional presence with minimal sibilance and room noise.

Q: What accessories are recommended for optimal results?

A: A stable mic stand or boom, a shock mount, a pop filter or windscreen, and proper acoustic treatment in the recording space will help you maximize clarity, reduce sibilance, and keep the microphone performing at its best across various environments.

Q: How does the cardioid pick-up pattern benefit me?

A: The cardioid pattern focuses on the source in front of the microphone, while rejecting sounds from the sides and rear. This helps to reduce bleed from other instruments, minimize room ambience, and improve isolation in busy studios or live rooms.

Way too small with very little stretch.
I ordered a size 4X to make sure they were loose enough. The ones I received are like a size 8 very small.

If you haven't switched to boxer briefs, you're missing out :)

I figured I ought to provide a review, something I'm not prone to doing even though I often/always bank my purchases on item reviews, since I just bought me a second set of these underwear because they're just that good! I bought my 1st set of these 2 months ago because I was on the hunt for some new comfortable underwear and omfort was my main criteria. Wasn't aware that I was dealing with some health issues that was causing a fair bit of internal inflammation, just knew that I had had enough of basically everything I had at the time because they were old, ratty looking and even my all-time favorites had begun feeling too... something... not exactly too tight, yet they just weren't very comfortable anymore either and I didn't need that kind of extra stress in my life. But. I'm a barely-makin-it domestic violence survivor. Sure, I'm super proud to have gotten as far as I have in this world (considering that post-separation psychological terrorism and torture continue to thus day, 5 years after I broke free) but, by rights and family-rearing, I should be living in a whole different world right now... which is my way of saying that money is extra, EXTRA tight in my house...and yet, I still have "caviar tastes", ifykwim. Lol. And, frankly, neither I nor anyone else should have to scrimp on comfortable, classy-feeling, fashionable clothing no matter how small our clothing budget may be. I was spurred to check out boxer briefs for women after reading about a few different women's favorite brands in the comments on soneones IG post (that must have been in regards to underwear, but heck if I can remember the details). So, off I went to scout around on Amazon to see what this "boxer briefs" business was about... desperately hoping that the term was not just a rebranding of those "hipsters" things. I am 46yo, 5'10" (potentially closer to 5'11"... not something I care enough about to know for certain, lol) and, clothing size-wise, my whole adult life I have consistently been a 16-18/18-20, top to bottom, with a shape that seems some what apple-ish at the moment but has, in general, always been more hourglass than apple. Also it seems as if I might have rather freakishly high hips, lol... not really, but for reference, when it comes to pants or jeans what generally passes as "tall", usually a 33"-34" inseem, fit like ankle or cigar length pants on me. But evidently I don't just have long legs, no, this momma's body seems to also have one heck of a long, tall pelvis which I did finally measure to figure out for sure but, prior to that, I could tell based on the way that low cut underwear like bikini & hipsters, and any form of low rise pants, barely make it north of my low lying c-section scar location which, for those who can't relate, is basically at the top of my hooha or just at the point where my belly and my hooha meet. And because that point on my body is not even remotely close to my "hip" area such items basically fall right off my body unless they're super stretchy and I deliberately hike them up to my hip area which I put up with in my 20s and 30s, for the sake of fashion I suppose, but which was and is quite ungodly uncomfortable, and... basically... I am so over with "uncomfortable" anything (men included, lol.) In both cases I bought size 11, though, if I'm being honest, I am certain that a 10 would have fit well, too. And who knows, a 10 might have been just as comfortable or even more comfortable than the 11... but, I didn't take bother taking the chance to find out when I ordered my second set because the first set (size 11) made me so unbelievably happy that they literally changed my views about underwear for life. This whole "pants come off after work" thing or the memes about people working from home (due to covid restrictions) and not wearing pants never jived with me prior to having these boxer briefs, but now... omg... these things are super inexpensive and somehow still suit my somewhat "caviar taste" perfectly (have a good handfeel and are just so unbelievably super comfortable), PLUS... they're opaque and they basically fit (and look) like I'm wearing a loungy pair of bike shorts, so... yeah, I've spent some time over the last 2 months actually chillin in my house in my freaking underwear!!!! Life. Changing. :D
