“The 21st century. Mankind has colonized the last unexplored region on Earth – the ocean. As captain of the SeaQuest and its crew, we are its guardians. For beneath the sea lies the future.”

Travel to the spectacular undersea world of SeaQuest DSV with all 57 groundbreaking episodes from all 3 seasons. The amazing adventure begins in the mid-21st century, as humankind expands its undersea colonization efforts, and a tenuous world peace is enforced by the United Earth Oceans (UEO). In order to protect the fledgling underwater colonies from unknown dangers and hostile invaders lurking in the depths of Earth's last frontier, the UEO recruits Captain Nathan Bridger (Roy Scheider) to command the high-tech battle submarine SeaQuest and its diverse and eclectic crew. Along for the ride are a roster of stellar guest stars, including Charlton Heston, William Shatner, Seth Green, Kellie Martin and Kent McCord.

Set in "the near future" (the year 2018 in the first season), seaQuest DSV originally mixed high drama with realistic scientific fiction. This Hi-Tech Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea for the 90s featured the adventures of the seaQuest DSV, a 1,000-foot Deep Submergence Vehicle 4600, a super-sub patrolling the deep on behalf of the United Earth Oceans (UEO) organization. The oceans of the world are now being colonized and their resources are being exploited with the establishment of undersea farming, mining and manufacturing communities.

SeaQuest was funded by the UEO as a means to protect its undersea interests and stories followed the experiences of its crew as they encountered outside forces (including aliens) seeking not only to control the ocean but the Earth itself. It is commanded by Captain Nathan Bridger (Roy Scheider) with a crew of 312 people (224 scientists and 88 military personnel). Key members of Nathan’s team included chief engineer Lieutenant Catherine Hitchcock (Stacy Haiduk); the chief medical officer and head of the seaQuest science department Dr Kristin Westphalen (Stephanie Beacham), and Lucas Wolenczak (Jonathan Brandis), a teenager who was an expert with dolphins and had devised a system that enabled dolphins to talk. His ‘assistant’ was Darwin, a dolphin he rescued from a fisherman’s net (voiced by Frank Welker). The ship’s janitor, Dagwood (Peter DeLuise) was from a race of genetically engineered beings called Daggers; Miguel Ortiz (Mario Sanchez) was the sensor chief; Benjamin Krieg (John D’Aquino) was the supply and morale officer and Tony Piccolo (Michael DeLuise) was a crew member who had been physically altered by a scientific experiment and had surgically implanted gills.

The first season was very eco-aware and green-oriented, which resulted in a choppy critical reaction. Nervous studio executives insisted on more bug-eyed monsters and fantasy – to the displeasure of Roy Scheider (and many hardcore fans) who dismissed it as “childish trash”. Blaming continued disputes with producers and abandonment of the show's original premise, Scheider requested to be released from his contract with NBC at the end of season two. In its third and final season the series was renamed seaQuest 2032. In the opening episode, Captain Bridger retires to raise his new grandson and was replaced by Captain Oliver Hudson, played by Michael Ironside.

Better than Expected
Format: Paperback
Though the title impied there were new poems in this volume, I found some of my favorites, but didn't notice any new ones. Never mind, they are wonderful, and I liked this book so much, I purchased a copy for a friend and published poet, who's poet in the schools, Grace Grafton, who is familiar with Merwin's writing. That made both of us happy. On a practical level, it is easier to schlep a single volume with you than three of four, when what you want is 'La crême de la crême.' Makes a welcome addition to any collection, a great gift to introduce Merwin, and a pleasure to read the smooth, ariculate poetry that is food for the soul. Antoinette Constable
