Niet vaak is de teloorgang van een liefde zo genadeloos te boek gesteld. Op 13 oktober 1975 begon Hugo Claus aan een dagboek, waarin hij zijn ontsporende liefdesrelatie met Sylvia Kristel beschreef. Claus beschouwde het als onvergeeflijk verraad en besloot onmiddellijk het verhaal van haar ontrouw minutieus vast te leggen. Het zou de stof moeten vormen voor een nieuwe roman. Het werd een rauw, wrokkig, soms ontluisterend relaas. Tot in de pijnlijke details beschrijft hij haar bedrog en haar vele affaires. Maar hij geselt ook zichzelf: zijn ziekelijke jaloezie en zijn, ondanks alles, niet-aflatende seksuele honger. Claus’ taal is aards en trefzeker. We zien een schrijver aan het werk die zijn materiaal kneedt, maar waarbij de schrijver het steeds weer verliest van de gekrenkte minnaar.
