Wine Region: Armagnac - France

Grape:45%Baco, 45%Ugni blanc, 10%Folle blanche

This blend reflects key milestones in Darroze history:

  • 1974: 50-year-old Armagnacs contribute complex aromas, tannic structure, and notes of dried fruit and spices.
  • 1982 & 1985: Hot years producing Armagnacs with remarkable volume and fullness.
  • 1994: A pivotal year for Darroze, marked by a shift to less toasted barrels, enhancing the fruit profile.
  • 2002 & 2011: Young eaux-de-vie bring fruit and freshness, completing the aromatic harmony.

Tasting notes:
Beautiful golden colour with mahogany highlights. The nose is very expressive, offering delicate aromas of candied fruit (apricot, orange zest), fine spices (vanilla, cinnamon, licorice), dried fruit (fig, almond) and lightly toasted bread. Full-bodied tannins on the palate. This eau de vie combines the ardour of a young Armagnac and the wisdom of a 50-year-old brandy. Lots of spice, leather and candied orange. An armagnac of exquisite complexity and endless length.

About the winery:
As the son of acclaimed chef Jean Darroze, Francis had a natural inclination to the culinary arts and a taste for tradition and authenticity. He channelled this into a passioned search for quality individual estate Armagnacs, starting as a trader and producer of vintage Bas-Armagnacs in 1974. With the utmost respect for the spirit, alcohol levels are reduced through years of evaporation through ageing — never through dilution with water. Blending and colouring agents are also prohibited. And to prolong the ageing process, the Armagnac is only bottled when ordered. The business is now in the hands of Francis' son Marc, a trained oenologist.

For several generations, the Darroze family has scoured Gascony in the Grands Crus centre of the Bas Armagnac region. Thousands of centuries-old treasures are held in stock at the Darroze house. This diversity in crus, vintages, grape varieties and styles has allowed Marc Darroze to work on this range known as « Les Grands Assemblages » (The Great Blends). Chosen for their complementary characteristics, the selected Armagnacs in each blend are of different ages. Each age on the bottle indicates the age of the youngest Armagnac in the blend.

Am almost done reading
Format: Hardcover
This book came recommended by a very hospitable friend. I'm almost done reading and wanted to drop by here to leave a positive review. Lots of good useful ideas in this book and it has an engaging writing style. I think the author is specifically gifted in the area of hospitality - not everyone can live like she and her family do, but there are a lot of practical tips if you're hoping to grow in that area of your life.

Hospitality is the Most Important Thing
Format: Hardcover
The author does an excellent job making a case for how important and underrated hospitality is to a hurting world. She captures my attention instantly with her story about her neighbor Hank. She leaves me hanging through a couple of chapters before I get more details about his story. I almost put down the book permanently when she gets on her high religious horse. I suspect she and I would disagree about some of our theology. And I didn't need to be persuaded, so those chapters weren't written for me. If you skim (or skip) that beginning section, it's well worth the practical ideas for how to open up your own home and life in hospitality. A great challenge that I shall take up. May all our neighbors become friends and our friends become family.

Didn't Notice Difference
The taste is actually pretty good, honestly it's more like a treat than a supplement... but I haven't noticed any significant changes after going through the entire bottle. They didn't cause any upset stomach or side effects, which is a plus, but the overall benefits feel negligible.
