One Herbert von Karajan, newly appointed to the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic, and having undertaken the challenge of recording his first stereo complete set? The gamble paid off commercially with over a million copies sold, but it was also a great success artistically. The overall architecture from the first to the ninth is highly coherent, and similarly, Beethoven's force of character and imperious momentum is palpable at every moment of listening.
