Sandro Botticelli created his famous series of drawings illustrating Dante’s Divine Comedy—including the Inferno—over a period spanning roughly from the mid-1480s to the mid-1490s. These works were commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici and are considered masterpieces of Renaissance art. The exact dates are debated, but most scholars agree the project began around 1480–1481 and continued for about a decade, with some estimates extending as late as 1505. Botticelli never fully completed the series, and only a few of the illustrations were fully colored; most remain as detailed silverpoint drawings. Divine Comedy Illustrated by Botticelli.
